The vibrant three-day celebration of the 177th Founder’s Day at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, kicked off with a rich tapestry of Gandhian ideals, nostalgia, and sporting spirit on Wednesday. As the world’s oldest co-educational residential school honored the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, students, faculty, and Old Sanawarians united to commemorate the day. The distinguished Chief Guest, Justice Arvind Malhotra, District and Session Judge at Solan, graced the event with his presence.
During the celebrations, Justice Malhotra announced the prestigious Gandhi Award winners: Sirat Dua, Tanmaya Sahni, and Inaaya Kumar, a recognition established by Navin Chawla, former Chief Election Commissioner of India and an esteemed alumnus of the school. The event also honored ten dedicated employees as Safai and Paryavaran Mitras for their exceptional contributions to the Svabhaav Swachhta and Sanskaar Swachhta initiatives under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan campaign.
In his inspiring address, Justice Malhotra emphasized the importance of incorporating Gandhian principles amidst today’s competitive landscape for fostering societal improvement and positive change. The event then shifted into an exhilarating sports arena, featuring basketball and futsal matches between Old Sanawarians and current students, sparking a lively spirit of sportsmanship. Pankaj Sapru, President of the Old Sanawarians Society (OSS), nostalgically shared, “This playground has been the foundation of our fitness. It’s a deeply emotional experience for the entire OS team to compete against the younger generation.”
The afternoon also included a heartwarming assembly at the school chapel, where 80 alumni from the 1954, 1959, 1964, and 1999 batches gathered to reminisce with students. Headmaster Himmat Singh Dhillon celebrated the school’s recent accomplishments and teased upcoming projects, while students read heartfelt messages from numerous Old Sanawarians, many recalling fond memories of influential teachers who shaped their journeys.
Amidst the festivities, students and faculty showcased their artistic talents through exhibitions featuring art, sculpture, photography, fashion design, woodcraft, and more. The Founder’s Day celebrations will continue on Thursday and Friday, promising a rich cultural extravaganza that reflects the history, heritage, and tradition of this 177-year-old institution. On the final day, Kiran Tandon Nadar, Chairperson of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Arts and Trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation, will preside over a significant event, culminating in the inauguration of a newly constructed girls’ dormitory.
