A major political controversy has erupted after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey made a provocative statement holding the Supreme Court responsible for allegedly inciting a “religious civil war” in the country. The remarks have sparked fierce reactions across the political spectrum, forcing the BJP to publicly disassociate itself from his views.
Dubey, who represents the Godda constituency in Jharkhand, alleged that the Supreme Court is overstepping its jurisdiction. “If for everything one has to go to the Supreme Court, then what’s the point of having Parliament and state assemblies? They should be shut down,” he said in his controversial statement. He further added, “The Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, is solely responsible for the civil unrest and religious conflicts taking place in this country.”
The controversy intensified further when BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, Dinesh Sharma, echoed sentiments that seemed critical of the judiciary. Referring to the Constitution, he said, “As per Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision, the powers of the legislature and judiciary are clearly defined. No one can direct the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha, and the President has already given assent on certain matters. The President is supreme, and no one can challenge his authority.”
These statements led to sharp criticism from the opposition. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh accused the BJP of trying to undermine the authority of the Supreme Court and weaken democratic institutions.
In response to the growing backlash, BJP national president J.P. Nadda issued a strong clarification, distancing the party from the statements made by both MPs. In a post on social media platform X, Nadda wrote:
“The remarks made by BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma regarding the judiciary and the Chief Justice of India are their personal views. The Bharatiya Janata Party has no connection with these statements, nor does it endorse them in any way. We categorically reject such statements.”
He further emphasized,
“The BJP has always respected the judiciary and accepted its decisions and suggestions with an open mind. As a political party, we firmly believe that the Supreme Court and all courts in India are vital pillars of our democracy and essential guardians of the Constitution. I have instructed both MPs, and all party members, to refrain from making such statements in the future.”
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between different arms of the government and raises questions about the boundaries of public discourse by elected representatives. As the political fallout continues, all eyes are now on whether further disciplinary actions will follow within the party.
