China Opposes Trump's Tariffs: ‘Fentanyl is America’s Problem

Trump’s Tariffs: The Chinese government on Sunday strongly condemned the Trump administration’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese imports. However, Beijing has kept the door open for negotiations with the U.S. to prevent further escalation of the trade dispute.

China’s Finance and Commerce Ministries announced that they would challenge Trump’s tariffs at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and implement “countermeasures” in response. The tariffs are set to take effect on Tuesday. Beijing’s response appears less aggressive than before, reflecting a softer diplomatic tone in recent weeks.

Trump’s Tariff Decision & China’s Response

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump ordered a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. He justified this move by urging China to take stronger action against the trafficking of fentanyl, a deadly opioid, into the United States.

In response, China’s Commerce Ministry stated that Trump’s decision was a “serious violation of international trade rules” and called on the U.S. to engage in honest negotiations and strengthen cooperation.

China’s move to file a WTO complaint is seen as a symbolic gesture, similar to its legal challenge against the European Union’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

Fentanyl Dispute: China’s Sharpest Reaction

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated that “there are no winners in a trade war.” However, China’s strongest response came on the issue of fentanyl.

The Foreign Ministry declared:

“Fentanyl is America’s problem. China has engaged in extensive anti-narcotics cooperation with the U.S. and achieved significant results.”

This statement follows similar urging by the Biden administration for China to curb the trafficking of fentanyl precursor chemicals.

China’s reaction signals its serious concern over Trump’s tariffs, but it remains open to negotiations. The impact of this trade dispute on the global economy will become clearer in the coming days.
